Charles,
Reynolds & Co. (aka Charles, Thomas & Reynolds): History
The
Company
Presumably
around 1858[1],
after Peter Charles and Samuel Massey Thomas dissolved their partnership with
Samuel’s brother, Ellis Pestell Thomas, as hosiery manufacturers in Leicester,
Peter and Samuel established a new business in London which was first listed in
an 1860[2]
city directory as Charles & Thomas, fancy head dress manufacturers at 56½
Wood Street. Samuel[3]
was also listed separately that year as a “fancy manufactr,
see Charles & Thomas”. By 1865[4]
John Reynolds was added to the partnership and the business became known as
“Charles, Thomas & Reynolds, manufacturers & importers of optical
instruments, stereocopes, jewellery,
fancy leather & cabinet goods, brushes, combs, perfumery, photographic
albums &c, 26 Milk Street, Cheapside”.
Also, that year John Reynolds[5]
was listed with the words “fancy goods &c, see Charles, Thomas &
Reynolds” after his name and Samuel Massey Thomas[6]
was listed separately with the following words after his name, “chenille net
& head dress maker, see Charles, Thomas & Reynolds”.
In
1868[7]
the partnership between the three men was dissolved with
regard to Samuel Massey Thomas and the business was carried on by Peter
Charles and John Reynolds. By 1870[8]
it was renamed Charles, Reynolds & Co. with John Reynolds continuing to be
listed separately as “fancy goods &c, see Charles, Reynolds & Co”. In 1875[9]
and 1880[10]
it was recorded with the same name and expanded to include importers of
Japanese goods at 26 & 27 Milk Street with John Reynolds still listed
separately. Around 1881[11]
John Reynolds retired and moved to Farnham Royal in Buckinghamshire and was no
longer listed in London directories.
After 1880 the firm continued to be listed with the Charles, Reynolds
& Co. name presumably because that was how it was best known by its
customers. Or possibly because John
Reynolds’s sons worked for the company since they were listed in census records[12]
with related occupations, but they must not have been partners as they were not
listed separately in city trade directories.
The firm was recorded the same way in 1885[13],
1890[14]
and 1895[15]. It is also possible that several of Peter
Charles’s sons also worked for the firm for a period of time
as they were also listed with occupations associated with the business’s trade
in census records[16]. By 1890[17]
the firm moved to 72 & 73 Fore Street and 18 & 20 Fore Street Avenue
where it remained until at least 1895[18]. Apparently, the business censed to exist
after that or was renamed and moved to a different location
probably because Peter Charles died in 1891[19]. It was no longer listed in city directories in 1900[20].
The
only 
Avery style needle case discovered to date with the Charles, Reynolds
& Co. name and address stamped on the bottom is the Drum, pictured on the
previous page. This needle case was
registered by W. Avery & Son of Redditch in 1876 and has only been found
with 5 different company names stamped on it.
The
Charles Owners
Peter Charles was born c1830 in Warden,
Northumberland, a town 288 miles northwest of London. He was the son of Richard, a paper maker, and
Elizabeth Charles. By the time he was 20
years old he was living in North London with many others, all who were listed
as warehousemen or clerks. It seems most
like that he was living there with a group that was learning to be warehouseman
or they were living in a huge factory with at least 8 clerks and 21
warehouseman workers. While living there
he met John Reynolds who also lived at that address
and they later became business partners. At some time in the 1850’s, before
establishing his own business, Peter joined the Thomas brothers as a partner in
their hosiery business which was dissolved in 1858. Peter married Elizabeth Ellen Stafford in
1855 at St. Leonard in the Shoreditch section of London where they lived for a
few years before moving to Dartford, Kent, a town approximately 16 miles
southeast of London. By 1871 they moved
to Stoke Newington in North London and by 1881 finally settled in Barnet, a
town about 12 miles north of central London.
Peter and Elizabeth had 9 children from 1856-1866: Lydia, Robert Edmund,
Florence, Elizabeth Annie, Peter James, Richard Stafford, Ellen Alice, Thomas and Herbert.
Peter was consistently listed as a warehouseman or manufacturer of fancy
goods or a merchant dealing in fancy goods throughout his lifetime. He died in 1891 at age 60 and his death
notice is listed below. His probate
record indicated he was formerly of 26 and 27 Milk Street in Cheapside and late
of 72 and 73 Fore Street which is where the Charles, Reynolds & Co. was
originally located and where it moved to later.
He left an estate valued at £67,073
(£5,503,293 today[21])
to his wife, and two sons, Peter James Charles and
Richard Stafford Charles. In 1891 his
wife Elizabeth and their youngest son Herbert were visiting Bournemouth, a
coastal resort town, most likely on vacation.
Elizabeth died in 1903 at age 73 leaving an estate of £337 to a family friend and her
youngest son Herbert Charles.

DEATH
OF MR. PETER CHARLES
Deep
sorrow will be felt by the inhabitants of Finchley at the untimely death of Mr.
Peter Charles which took place at his residence, Olders-hill
House, Finchley, on Saturday, and the heartfelt sympathy of all old Finchleians will be extended to his family in the terrible
calamity that has overtaken them. Those
who had any knowledge of Mr. Charles will readily call to mind his love of
horses, and it was in connection with this phase of his nature that the primary
cause of his death occurred. On Saturday
the 10th inst., he was going to ride horseback; while getting into the saddle,
and when one foot was in the stirrup the other slipped throwing him backwards,
inflicting a severe wound in the back of his head. He subsequently drove over to Dr. Langford
who found that very serious injuries had resulted. Every possible attention was paid to the
patient during the subsequent days, and the medical skill of the highest order
summoned to his aid but erysipelas followed and Mr.
Charles passed away on Saturday afternoon the sixth day after the accident in
the 61st year of his age. Mr. Charles
was the head of the firm Charles, Reynolds and Co., Japanese Warehousemen of
Milk-street, City of London. He was an
old inhabitant of Finchley a Gladstone Liberal in politics, and the president
of the Finchley Liberal Club. At all
times he was an enthusiastic supporter of his party in politics, and at the
last general election rendered most signal support to the Liberal cause in the
Hornsey division of Middlesex. The last
time he appeared on the public platform was on the 29th of December when the
members of the Finchley Liberal Club assembled under his genial chairmanship to
celebrate the 81st birthday of Mr. Gladstone, on which occasion he expressed a
hope that the present sovereign might be spared to show assent to the bill
giving Home Rule to Ireland, Mr. Charles
was also a member of the body of Feoffecs of the
Finchley Charities Estate and but for the event which proved so disastrous in
its results would have been present at the inquiry at Church-end, which was
sitting at the time the accident took place.tt
Limited
information has been found regarding the 5 sons of Peter and Elizabeth Charles
because the Charles surname was quite common in the London area during the
Victorian Era. The eldest son, Robert
Edmund Charles was born in 1856 in Shoreditch.
In 1881, and also when Robert married in 1883,
he was listed as a warehouseman probably working in the Charles, Reynolds &
Co. firm for a few years. However in 1901 and 1911 he was recorded as a commercial
traveler in the paper trade. The second
son, Peter James Charles, who was born in 1860 in Dartford, Kent was listed as
a warehouseman in 1881 and in his 1891 marriage record, again most likely for
his father’s business. The third son,
Richard Stafford Charles, who was born in 1862 in Dartford, became a land
surveyor and estate agent, whereas the youngest son Herbert Charles, who was
born in 1866 in Hackney, became a medical practitioner. To date additional information about the 4th
son, Thomas Charles who was born in Hackney in 1864, has not been found.
The
Reynolds Owners
John
Reynolds, the son of a shoemaker, was born in Dingwall, Scotland in 1831, 548
miles northwest of London, the son of John Reynolds and Margaret
Macpherson. By the time he was 19
years
old he was living in North London working as a clerk with many others including
Peter Charles. They were either in a
group home learning to be clerks or warehousemen or were living and working in
a large factory as there were 8 clerks and at least 21 warehouseman workers
there. In 1855 John returned to
Dingwall, Scotland where he married Lillias G. Fraser. After the wedding they returned to the
Hackney section of London where they lived next door to Samuel Massey Thomas
and his family in 1861. John and
Lillias had 5 children between 1856 and 1865: Donald Fraser, John, Henry
Albert, Ludovick Stewart and Frank Ludovio. By 1865 John became a partner with Peter
Charles and Samuel Massey Thomas and their warehouse business was named
Charles, Thomas & Reynolds.
Unfortunately, John’s wife, Lillias, died in 1869 at the rather young
age of 32. In 1871 John travelled to
Llandudno, Wales, 222 miles northwest of London, possibly on business or on
vacation. He was listed throughout his
life as a warehouseman, fancy goods warehouseman or something similar. By 1881 he retired and moved to Farnham
Royal, Eton, Buckinghamshire, 40 miles southwest of London where he died in
1886. His estate, valued at £4,754, passed to his two eldest
sons John Reynolds a publisher and Donald Fraser Reynolds a Japanese
merchant. Not much is known about his
sons because Reynolds was also a popular name in the London area. The two eldest appear to have spent their
early years working for their father’s business because their occupations
listed in their father’s probate record were the type of workers needed to
produce the products Charles, Reynolds & Co. sold. Donald Fraser Reynolds was born in 1856 in
Hackney and died a couple years after his father in 1889 and John Reynolds Jr.
was born in 1868 in Hackney.
The
Thomas Owners
Samuel
Massey Thomas was born in 1825 in Worthington, Leicestershire, a town 112 miles
northwest of London. He was the son of
Ellis Pestell Thomas, a surgeon, and Ann.
By 1851 he moved to Peckham in the Lewisham section of southeast
London. Also in
1851 he married Jane Ann Bennett at St. Leonard in the Shoreditch section of
north London. During the 1850’s Samuel
spent a few years as a partner with his brother Ellis Pestell Thomas Jr.’s
hosiery business and with Peter Charles before establishing his own warehouseman
business with Peter and later being joined by John Reynolds. By 1861 the Thomas family was living in
Hackney, neighbors of John Reynolds and his family. Samuel received his freedom of the City of
London in 1864 where he was listed as the son of Ellis Pestell Thomas and as a
warehouseman at 26 Milk Street, the address of the Charles, Thomas &
Reynolds company at that time. Samuel
and Jane had 2 children born between 1852 and 1865: Ellis George and Kate. The Thomas family remained in Hackney and
Samuel was listed as a warehouseman or manufacturer throughout his life. He left the Charles, Thomas & Reynolds
business in 1868 but continued to be listed as a warehouseman in 1871. His wife Jane died in 1873 at age 47 and
Samuel died a year later in 1874 at age 49.
Samuel left an estate valued at £7,000.
The
only son of Samuel Massey Thomas, Ellis George Thomas, was born in 1852 in
Shoreditch. By age 18 in 1871 Ellis was
working as a clerk, but by the time he married in 1889 he was working as a
member of the stock exchange. Again,
limited information has been found regarding him because the Thomas surname was
even more common in London than Charles and Reynolds.

(Note: With regard to the Reynolds family referenced here, a John
Reynolds was listed in city directories with the words see Charles, Thomas
& Reynolds or see Charles, Reynolds & Co. after his name, indicating a
John Reynolds was a partner in this company.
Based on a search of the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Censuses, records for all
persons with this name in the London area were reviewed, and the John Reynolds
listed here appears to be the only person with that name who worked as a
warehouseman in London during the years researched, therefore the assumption is
that this is the correct person. Samuel
Massey Thomas was also listed in city directories with the words see Charles,
Thomas & Reynolds after his name and he was the only person with that name
in the London area and he was also a warehouseman. Additionally in the 1861 Census, this John
Reynolds and this Samuel Massey Thomas were living next to each other with the
same occupation which implies that they were partners in this business at that
time).
